The Los Angeles Forum To Undergo $50M Renovation/Operation Confidence

The Los Angeles Forum To Undergo

$50M Renovation/Operation Confidence

The owners of Madison Square Garden have developed an ambitious plan to turn the faded Forum into a juggernaut that would challenge the region’s big arenas, including Staples Center.

Operation Confidence have fond memories of the Los Angeles Forum because in 1984, Operation Confidence Totally Confident Disabled Drill Team taped their drill team performance routine on the grounds. The tape was to be featured in the Closing Ceremony of the 1984 Olympics.

It was because of President Ronald Reagan letter of support that encouraged  Peter V. Ueberroth and David L. Wolper to allow the team a performance tape to be shown during the opening day celebration..

For the first time in history  not only did a disabled team perform in the historical Olympics but the Totally Confident Disabled Drill Team had queens in wheelchair floats  to  lead the team's performance on the grounds of the Los Angeles Forum.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein said San Diego Mayor Bob Filner should resign:/Operation Confidence

California Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein said the city's mayor lacked a 'moral compass' regarding his sexual harassment allegations and called for him to step down. Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a fellow Californian, weighed in, blasting the 'reprehensible' sex lives of 'clueless' male politicians, specifically New York mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) called for San Diego Mayor Bob Filner to resign for lacking a "moral compass" in light of his sexual harassment allegations — as New Yorkers grow weary of Anthony Weiner's digital sexcapades.

"It's a very tough job and I don't think that somebody who is lacking a moral compass really sets a role model or really will provide the kind of leadership that San Diegans want," Feinstein said on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday morning.

Mayor Tom Bradley and Operation Confidence

Mayor Tom Bradley/Operation Confidence

Thirty-five years before President Barack Obama's election as President, the question of race and the possibility of bridging racial and ethnic barriers was put to a test in an overlooked and untold story in American politics:  But the 1973 election of Tom Bradley, an extraordinary politician was the first African American Mayor of a major city who redefined and reconfigured Los Angeles.

He was Mayor for an unprecedented twenty years, City Councilman for ten years and served as a police officer for twenty-one years.

He opened City Hall and commission positions to women and minorities, created the first ever profitable Olympics, brought an historically abusive police department under civilian control, and transformed Los Angeles into one of the most diversified and important cities in the world., a five-term Mayor  serving in office from 1973 to 1993.

Mayor Bradley laid the groundwork for inter-racial coalitions unsurpassed until the election of President Barack Obama.  It was because of Mayor Bradley that the Los Angeles Department on Disabilities was established the only office in the nation as a department.

I, Consuella (Connie) Mackey, Executive Director of Operation Confidence a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization who advocates for people with disabilities had the pleasure of meeting Mayor Bradley in 1969, when my father took me to  his small campaign office in Los Angeles. I found him to be a kind well educated man who was concerned about the well-being of the community and diversity in the city.

Mayor Bradley campaign office

Mayor Bradley was responsible for Operation Confidence getting its start

In 1979, I was playing ball with family members and broke my foot. I found myself disabled for a short while. After feeling sorry for myself I became humble and could then see through the eyes of a person with a disability how they must have felt to have a disability while dealing with discrimination and little or no accessibility in Los Angeles.

It was of Mayor Tom Bradley who made a difference by opening City Hall and city commissions to women, minorities and established first Department of Disabilities office in the nation, still holding that title today.

He transformed Los Angeles from a conservative, white, urban center into one of the most diversified and important cities in the world with a new skyline, vibrant downtown and revitalized financial and business districts.

After my accident I wanted to do something to give back to the disabled community. All I had was the beauty industry since that was my profession, cosmetologist and fashion designs. I went to Mayor Bradley and presented my proposal and in 1980, Operation Confidence opened Operation Confidence Beauty Skill Center for the Handicapped on the campus of the  Joseph Widney High School, in Los Angeles.

Yours truly and Mayor Bradley in 1970

Operation Confidence came along at the time when the Americans with Disability Act was established 2 years later and was an excellent opportunity to changes the lives of people with disabilities while assisting students to prepare for the workplace and mainstream society.  Classes provided life skills, dress for success with clothing that had accessible openings and job preparation workshops.

The program also gave students a feeling of confidence and self worth and the beauty makeover program was also used as a form of rehabilitation.

The following year The Totally Confident Dance Team and fashion models were created who gave performances all over Los Angeles. They received standing ovations at most engagements.

Mayor Bradley was so pleased with the success of the program until he presented Operation Confidence with the Mayor's Certificate of Appreciation Award

Mayor Bradley also wrote a letter to the Channel 11 Jefferson Award encouraging them to honor and give recognition to Operation Confidence Beauty Program.

In June of 1981, Mayor Bradley sent a press release out to media and the general public inviting them  to attend Operation Confidence Disabled Fashion Models fashion show held at the Los Angeles City Hall.

The event was covered by the Los Angeles Times Newspaper in the View Section

Operation Confidence is still going strong today and owes a lifetime of gratitude to Mayor Tom Bradley who believed and gave us the opportunity change the lives of over 20,000 individuals with disabilities.

Mayor Bradley made history as the first African American mayor of a major U.S. city and was successful because he continued to build upon his trans-racial coalition - the most durable and significant in American modern history, and unsurpassed until the election of President Barack Obama thirty-five years later.

He influenced two generations of policy makers and leaders and brought the city a glowing spot on the world stage with the 1984 Olympics – the first-ever profitable Games.

It was because of Mayor Bradley that Operation Confidence Totally Confident Disabled Drill Team  the first disabled drill team to ever be invited to perform in the able-bodied Olympics. More about Mayor Bradley and The Totally Confidence Team in my next Blog.

In closing, in 1993, Mayor Bradley did not seek a sixth term and announced his retirement. Three years later, he suffered a stroke, which left him partially paralyzed and unable to speak for the rest of his life. In 1998, he died of a heart attack at 80 years old.

Operation Confidence will always be thankful to Mayor Tom Bradley and his life, incredible achievements and legacy that will never be forgotten.

Retired Steven B. Sample, University of Southern California and Operation Confidence

Retired Steven B. Sample,
University of Southern California

Sample's served as president of the University of Southern California from 1991 to August 2010, and under his leadership, USC solidified its status as one of the nation’s leading research universities and emerged as a world leader in the fields of communication, multimedia technologies, and life sciences.

During Sample’s tenure, USC became a highly selective undergraduate institution; completed a national record-setting fundraising campaign and received five gifts of $100 million or more; conducted the largest capital construction campaign in its history on both campuses; received national acclaim for its innovative community partnerships; and advanced its presence and influence as a global university that enrolls more international students and has more international alumni than any other American university.

Sample is a tenured professor in the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. As president, he co-taught with management expert Warren Bennis an undergraduate course titled “The Art and Adventure of Leadership.” His book, The Contrarian’s Guide to Leadership, has been a Los Angeles Times best-seller, was named one of six “must-reads” for leaders by Harvard Management Update of the Harvard Business School, and has been translated into five languages. He donates all royalties from the book to a scholarship fund for USC undergraduates.

I, Consuella Mackey, Executive Director Operation Confidence a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization who  advocates for people with disabilities including wounded and disabled veterans found Honorable Sample to be a  kind and humble man. He would have honored Operation Confidence 2011 United We Serve Tribute to our Disable Veterans if he was not stepping down as president that summer. He referred our letter to Mr. Tom Sayles, Vice President for Government and Community Relations to consider establishing a partnership. Sample reply letter below.

Former Minority Leader United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi/Operation Confidence

Former Minority Leader United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi

Nancy Patricia D'Alesandro Pelosi is the former Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives and served as the 60th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011. She was the first woman to hold the office and to date is the highest-ranking female politician in American history.

A member of the Democratic Party, Honorable Pelosi represents California's 12th congressional district, which consists of four-fifths of the city and county of San Francisco. The district was numbered as the 5th during Pelosi's first three terms in the House, and as the 8th from 1993 to 2013. She served as the House Minority Whip from 2002 to 2003, and was House Minority Leader from 2003 to 2007, holding the post during the 108th and 109th Congresses. Pelosi is the first woman, the first Californian and first Italian-American to lead a major party in Congress. After the Democrats took control of the House in 2007 and increased their majority in 2009, Pelosi was elected Speaker of the House for the 110th and 111th Congresses.

On November 17, 2010,The Honorable  Pelosi was elected as the Democratic Leader by House Democrats and therefore the Minority Leader in the Republican-controlled House for the 112th Congress

I, Consuella Mackey, Executive Director Operation Confidence had the pleasure of meeting The Honorable Pelosi when I attend the swearing-in ceremony of Congresswoman Karen Bass, 33rd California Congressional District, Sunday, January 3, 2011. Honorable Pelosi was guest speaker who gave the sweating in instillation that took place at the new Robert F. James D. Wolfensohn, 10 years as President of the World Bank/Operation Confidence

James D. Wolfensohn, 10 years as President of the World Bank/Operation Confidence

Let us move forward to fight poverty, to establish equity, and assure peace for the next generation.

James D. Wolfensohn made sustainable poverty reduction the World Bank Group’s overarching mission during his presidency, which ran from June 1, 1995 to May 31, 2005. Mr. Wolfensohn was the third president in Bank history to be reappointed for a second five-year term by the Board of Executive Directors.

During 10 years as President of the World Bank, James D. Wolfensohn focused the spotlight back on the institution's true purpose — fighting global poverty and helping the world's poor forge better lives. Under his leadership, the World Bank implemented a range of significant reforms to help achieve its mission, and broke ground in several major areas including corruption, debt relief, disabilities, the environment and gender.

He drew attention to the importance of involving young people and the need to expand the development dialog to include civil society, indigenous peoples, faith-based groups and other non-government stakeholders.

On December 3, 2002, Operation Confidence, a Los Angeles based 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization  who advocates for people with disabilities was invited to attend a World Bank conference on Disability & Development held at their headquarters in Washington D. C.

Operation Confidence represented The Los Angeles Department on Disabilities.

The World Bank Disability & Development department was established in June of 2001. as a  mandate by the United Nation to bring awareness about the 400 million people with disabilities in developing countries who are being segregated from their community and forced to live on the margins of life in need of urgent help from NGO’s and community based organizations, such as, Operation Confidence.

Former World Bank President James D. Wolfensohn presentation
Washington Post December 3, 2002

In 2000, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were born from the Millennium Declaration, which was an unprecedented global consensus to improve the condition of humanity throughout the world. Today the MDG’s are seen as the centerpiece of the development agenda. Notwithstanding the breadth and the scope of the MDGs, persons with disabilities continue to experience inequalities that are closely intertwined to all the development challenges linked to the MDGs. Disability remains as both a cause and consequence of poverty. Reaching the Millennium Development Goals is unlikely to be achieved unless the rights and needs of persons with disabilities are considered in the process of development.

It was after the conference that Consuella Mackey, Excutive Director Operation Confidence had the pleasure of meeting and networking with Mr. Wolfensohn and found him to be a kind and wonderful gentleman who was truly compassionate about the well-being of people with disabilities all over the world.

On May 31, 2005, at the end of his second term, Mr. Wolfensohn left office and assumed the post of Special Envoy for Gaza Disengagement.
