This is the moment Diana Nyad has been waiting 35 years for. On Monday afternoon the endurance swimmer reached the shores of Key West, becoming the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage, The Huffington Post reports. It was her fifth attempt since 1978.

During the approximately 110-mile journey which began on Saturday, the team of doctors traveling with her said her lips and tongue became swollen, causing her speech to be slurred, but they didn't intervene, according to the Associated Press.

According to CNN, after her historic swim, Nyad spoke to reporters and said she got three messages. 'One is we should never ever give up. Two is you never are too old to chase your dreams. Three is it looks like a solitary sport, but it's a team,' she said.

When she was just two miles from shore, Diana said, 'This is a lifelong dream of mine and I'm very, very glad to be with you,' her website says.

The 64-year-old has made four attempts to journey the Strait previous to this try. Her last attempt in 2012 ended due to boat problems, troubling currents and jellyfish stings.
